Test Edits

I am currently trying out some different transitions we could use in our final video.
I want our final piece to include some dreamlike elements that add to the hazy and intoxicated lens our protagonist is viewing the events of the party through.

Here are some examples below:

Final Storyboard

Here is the final storyboard I created. I decided to combine different aspects of everyones visions for the music video and ended up with this. I also added approximations for when each shot should appear during the song.

1. (00:00) The main character sits on the floor smoking, and is shown in and out of focus.

2. (00:08) He looks at his reflection in the mirror, talking to himself, perhaps in an attempt to bolster courage or practice a conversation.

3. (00:16) He exits the bathroom and walks alone through a hallway, swaying.

4. (00:30) He steps into the party and immediately stands out, feeling lonely and separate from the other partygoers.

5. (00:32) At the line "In my scope", a woman's eyes flash over the scene, adding a sense of mystery.

6. (00:36) Man gets increasingly upset and despondent, his friend tries to cheer him up but to no avail.

7. (00:50) Two hands almost touch, cutting just before to show his sad face.

8. (01:04) A 360 degree spin surrounding the man at the party representing unease, discomfort and perhaps nausea- he is overwhelmed.

9. (01:15) He is having a mental battle with himself as he holds his head in his hands- perhaps apparitions are seen by his side to represent inner turmoil.

10. (01:25) The mysterious girl turns her head but there is a cut before she reveals her face.

11. (01:35) A contrast is shown between the two, with her having fun dancing and him cradling himself on the floor.

12. (01:40) The girls face is finally revealed- slow motion to represent how fixated he is on her.

13. (01:47) Flashes of them appearing separately but side by side to give the illusion they are together.

14. (01:53) The flashes show them facing each other as the girl leans in.

15. (2:00) He steps back in surprise and hits the wall behind him- she disappears and is revealed to be an illusion.

16. (2:10) He slides down the wall, feeling defeated once again.

17. (2.29) The end of the song- he walks away without accomplishing what he came to the party to do. The song fades away while the scene fades to black.

Shooting

During the  reading week (25th-31st of October) we shot most of our music video. We initially started with filming all Karla's shots while she was available.

We all got involved with the directing of the video whilst Muireann was doing the filming, we all put forward our opinions on each shot so that we had exactly what we thought was right for each scene. We ensured to film plenty of footage so that we had lots to work with during the editing process.

We decided to give each character a primary colour in order to display each of their worlds. Karla was blue whilst Mattia was red. When their worlds begin colliding you can see the colours being to mash together.

When we filmed Mattias scenes we gathered some of our friends that were available at the time so that we could have plenty of extras in our party scenes.

We used a gimbal to create some very smooth shots. While we have most of our filming done we still have a few extra shots of Karla to film which we will do in the coming week.

Shooting list and shooting

I was directing the video so to do so i created my own shot list from Ciaras one and the Moyas story board

We first shot Karlas singular shots on the 27th of October during the reading week. We filmed the shots that we didn't need any background characters for. these are being used for the overlay of the visions of the girl.

The next day on the 28th of October we invited Mattia over at 4 and we invited the extras over at 5 so we could first film the individual shots with Mattia first without it being crowded. We were still filming individual shots when people started to arrive so it was harder to coordinate everything.

We filmed the party scenes next it was still bright outside and we wanted the RGB floodlights to fill the room with light and have no natural light so earlier before people came we put bin bags on our windows to block out all the light and set up the room for a party we did not have the numbers we intended but it still looked visually good so we went ahead.

Rough storyboard idea

For our story board we decided to all create our own interpretation of the music video, and then come together and mesh all of our ideas together so that everyone was included and happy with the final product.
  • My first storyboard idea is the story of a young man, who is visibly upset and distraught about something but the audience is unsure of the cause.
  • As the music video begins we begin to discoed that he is heartbroken, by a young woman who seems to have moved on and is unaffected by this heartbreak.
  • There will be an obvious contrast between the two characters.
  • I wanted to included some strobe-like shots where the two character slowly tun to face each other
  • I also wanted to include a shot of the young man walking down a hallway as the camera follows him and he is stumbling and falling to show his struggle.
  • Through out the video I think it would be visually pleasing to tease what the young woman looks like, so we never see her full face until a certain point in the song.

Storyboard Idea

My initial storyboard idea is a party narrative set in reverse. This leaves the viewer wondering what the sequence means until it is all tied together in the end and it is revealed how the main character became so upset. I also wanted to leave some of the story up to interpretation with small glimpses into what might have happened.

1. The scene is set with a view of a dishevelled young man lying on a bathroom floor smoking. The camera focuses and blurs with the beat of the song.

2.  A closeup shows cigarette embers glowing while his hand shakes.

3. This is intercut with flashes of a mysterious girl smiling and enjoying herself.

4. There is a lingering shot of two hands almost touching until they pull apart.

5. At the line "I've got you in my scope", there is a zoom in on the eyes of the girl.

6. The man gets up swaying and leaves the bathroom.

7. Walking haphazardly through a dark hallway, the people around him twist and blur as they move.

8.  As the beat drops. multicoloured lights flash and the view becomes distorted.

9. The girl appears to be enjoying herself as the camera focuses on her arms and legs as she dances in slow motion.

10. In contrast, the man looks as if he is about to cry.

11. He is shown falling to the floor.

12. Bystanders point and laugh at the camera from his perspective as his vision shakes and blurs.

13. It is revealed he has tripped and fallen over a bottle.

14. This is shown to be after he bursts through the hallway door in a hurry, pushing other party goers out of the way.

15. The girl he is pining over is shown to be dancing and gazing lovingly at someone else.

16. This scene shows the main character making eye contact with the girl for the first time as he smiles fondly.

Euphoria

The show Euphoria is a big inspiration with colours and camera shots.
